| 1 | Dissolve yeast in warm water; set aside. |
| 2 | In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar and baking soda. |
| 3 | Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. |
| 4 | Stir in yeast mixture and buttermilk; mix well. |
| 5 | Turn out onto a lightly floured surface; knead lightly a few times. |
| 6 | Roll to a ? thickness. |
| 7 | Cut with a 2 ? biscuit cutter. |
| 8 | Place on lightly greased baking sheets. |
| 9 | Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes. |
| 10 | Bake at 400 °F for 10 minutes or until golden brown. |
