| 1 | For filling: in blender or food processor, grind onion, ginger root, garlic, cinnamon stick, cardamom, cumin and salt. |
| 2 | Break cinnamon stick into pieces before adding to blender. |
| 3 | Spray a medium skillet with non stick spray. |
| 4 | Add ground beef and blend the spice mixture. |
| 5 | Cook until beef is browned. |
| 6 | Add 1 cup water and cook until water evaporates. |
| 7 | Add coriander leaves and stir to mix. |
| 8 | For pastry: cut shortening into flour until it resembles coarse meal. |
| 9 | Sprinkle with water, 2 teaspoons at a time, and mix with a fork until you can form it into a stiff dough. |
| 10 | Shape dough into ball and cut into 8 equal pieces. |
| 11 | Shape each piece into a ball and roll on lightly floured board into a 6-inch flat circle. |
| 12 | Cut circle in half. |
| 13 | Place a scant 1 tablespoon of filling on each half. |
| 14 | Moisten edges of pastry with water. |
| 15 | Fold and pinch edges together. |
| 16 | Brush lightly with egg substitute for golden brown pastry. |
| 17 | Bake at 425 °F for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown |
