Ingredients:
1/2 lbsVery lean ground beef
1/2 Medium onion, chopped
1/2 1 in fresh ginger root
6 Cloves garlic
1/2 tspCumin seed
1/2 tspSalt (optional)
1 tspChili powder
1/2 1 in cinnamon stick
1 Cardamom seed (optional)
1 cupWater
1/3 cupCiliantro leaves, chopped
2 cupAll-purpose flour
2 tbspVegetable shortening
10 tbspWater approximately
2 tspLiquid egg substitute
Procedures:
1For filling: in blender or food processor, grind onion, ginger root, garlic, cinnamon stick, cardamom, cumin and salt.
2Break cinnamon stick into pieces before adding to blender.
3Spray a medium skillet with non stick spray.
4Add ground beef and blend the spice mixture.
5Cook until beef is browned.
6Add 1 cup water and cook until water evaporates.
7Add coriander leaves and stir to mix.
8For pastry: cut shortening into flour until it resembles coarse meal.
9Sprinkle with water, 2 teaspoons at a time, and mix with a fork until you can form it into a stiff dough.
10Shape dough into ball and cut into 8 equal pieces.
11Shape each piece into a ball and roll on lightly floured board into a 6-inch flat circle.
12Cut circle in half.
13Place a scant 1 tablespoon of filling on each half.
14Moisten edges of pastry with water.
15Fold and pinch edges together.
16Brush lightly with egg substitute for golden brown pastry.
17Bake at 425 °F for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown
