Candy cane cookies

Ingredients:
COOKIES
1 cupShortening (half butter or
-Margarine if desired)
1 cupSifted powdered sugar
1 Egg
1 1/2 tspAlmond extract
1 tspVanilla extract
2 1/2 cupFlour
1 tspSalt
1/2 tspRed food coloring
TOPPING
1/2 cupSugar
1/2 cupCrushed peppermint candies
Procedures:
1Heat oven to 375 deg f.
2Mix shortening, sugar, egg, and flavorings thoroughly.
3Measure flour by dipping method or by sifting.
4Mix flour and salt.
5Stir flour mix into shortening mix.
6Divide dough into two equal parts.
7Blend red food coloring into one half of the dough.
8Roll a 4" (use one tablespoon of dough) strip from each color dough.
9For a smooth strip, roll back and forth on a lightly floured board.
10Place strips side by side on table, press together lightly and then twist like a rope.
11For best results do one cookie at a time because dough will dry out if you roll all of one color at a time.
12Place cookie on baking sheet and curve end to form a cane.
13When cookie sheet is full bake for about 9 minutes or until lightly browned.
14While cookies are still warm, sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and crushed candy.
15Makes about 48 cookies.
