| 1 | Preheat oven to 375 degrees. |
| 2 | Butter a shallow 1- to 1 ?quart baking dish. |
| 3 | Core pears and cut into ?inch thick slices to yield 2 ?cups. |
| 4 | Toast walnuts and chop coarsely. |
| 5 | combine fruit, juice, water, zest and sugar; gently toss to combine. |
| 6 | combine nuts, crumbs and butter. |
| 7 | Scatter about ?cup of the mixture in the baking dish. |
| 8 | Top with a third of the pear mixture. |
| 9 | Dot top with lima bean-size pieces of cheese (use half of the cheese). |
| 10 | Top with another layer of crumbs, then continue layering, ending with a fruit layer topped with remaining crumbs. |
| 11 | Press mixture down gently but firmly. |
| 12 | cover and bake for 30 minutes. |
| 13 | uncover and bake for 15 minutes. |
