Harvest bean chowder

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cupIdaho Great Northern beans
Water
Meaty ham bone
-OR- smoked ham hock
1 medOnion, chopped
1 Clove garlic, crushed
1 medPotato, diced
2 Carrots, sliced
1 cupChopped celery
1/2 cupChopped green pepper
3 tbspFlour
3 cupMilk
Salt and pepper
Procedures:
1Soak beans according to directions, using either method.
2Drain beans and measure liquid.
3Add water to make 1-?quarts.
4Place beans, liquid, ham bone, onion and garlic in large kettle.
5Simmer 1-?to 2 hours, or until tender.
6Add potato, carrots, celery and green pepper.
7Simmer 30 minutes longer.
8Remove ham bone.
9Cut up meat and return to soup.
10Thicken with flour blended with a little cold water.
11Add milk and heat gently.
12Season to taste with salt and pepper.
13Makes 6 to 8 servings.
