West haven chocolate cake

Ingredients:
8 ozDates, Pitted, Chopped
1 tspBaking Soda
1 cupBoiling Water
1 3/4 cupFlour, Unbleached, Sifted
2 tbspCocoa, Baking
1/2 tspSalt
1 cupShortening, Vegetable
1 cupSugar
2 largeEggs
6 ozSemi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
1/2 cupWalnuts, Chopped
Procedures:
1Combine dates, baking soda, and boiling water in a small bowl.
2Cool to room terperature.
3Sift together the flour, cocoa, and salt; set aside.
4Cream the shortening and sugar together in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy, using an electric mixer at medium speed.
5Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
6Blend in date mixture.
7Then stir in dry ingredients.
8Pour into a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
9Bake in preheated 350°F.
10Oven for 35 minutes or until cake tests done.
11Cool in pan on rack.
12Cut into squares and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.
