Ingredients:

| cup | Water, boiling | | 1
| cup | Butter | | 2
| cup | Sugar | | 4
| | Egg yolks | | 1
| tsp | Vanilla | | 2 1/2
| cup | Cake flour | | 1
| tsp | Baking powder | | 1/4
| tsp | Salt | | 1
| cup | Buttermilk | | 4
| | Egg whites, beaten stiff | | 1
| cup | Pecans, chopped | | 1
| cup | Flaked coconut | | | COCONUT FROSTING | | 2
| cup | Sugar | | 1/2
| cup | Water | | 1/2
| cup | White Karo syrup | | 2
| | Egg whites, beaten frothy | | | Pn Salt | | 1
| tsp | Vanilla | | 2
| cup | Flaked coconut |

Procedures:
| 1 | Melt chocolate in boiling water; cool. | | 2 | Cream together butter and sugar. | | 3 | Beat in egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. | | 4 | Add melted chocolate and vanilla. | | 5 | Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. | | 6 | Add to chocolate mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. | | 7 | Do not over beat. | | 8 | Fold in beaten egg whites, gently. | | 9 | Stir in nuts and coconut. | | 10 | Divid evenly into three generously greased and lightly floured cake pans. | | 11 | Bake in 350°F oven for 30-45 minutes..until lightly browned and center springs back at your touch. | | 12 | Cool, and frost with icing. | | 13 | Coconut frosting: cook sugar, water, and karo until it reaches soft ball stage. | | 14 | Pour syrup into egg whites and beat until stiff. | | 15 | Add salt and vanilla. | | 16 | Spread between layers and on top and sides of cake. | | 17 | Sprinkle icing with coconut as thickly as you like. |
