Ingredients:

| cup | Sunflower seeds | | 1
| tsp | Canola oil | | 8
| oz | Onion -- chopped | | 2
| | Cloves garlic -- minced | | 2
| lbs | Fresh tomatoes -- peeled and | | | Seeded | | 1
| can | Tomato paste -- (6 ounce) | | 1
| tsp | Minced fresh oregano | | 1
| tbsp | Minced fresh basil | | 1
| tsp | Salt -- optional | | | Freshly ground pepper | | 8
| oz | Fresh chard | | 1
| lbs | Linguine |

Procedures:
| 1 | Substitutions: 1 can (28 ounce) crushed or whole, peeled tomatoes with juice. | | 2 | Use any long, thin pasta. | | 3 | prepare the chard: wash, remove ribs, and cut crosswise into 1-inch ribbons. | | 4 | in a large saucepan or sautepan, toast seeds until very lightly browned. | | 5 | In food processor or nut grinder, grind half of the seeds until very fine. | | 6 | Reserve remaining half for garnish. | | 7 | Heat oil in the pan. | | 8 | Add onion and cook, stirring, until softened. | | 9 | Add garlic and cook briefly. | | 10 | Add tomatoes, tomato paste, ground sunflower seeds, herbs, salt and pepper. | | 11 | Simmer about 15 minutes until somewhat thickened. | | 12 | Steam chard until tender, about 5 minutes. | | 13 | In a large pot of boiling, salted water, cook pasta until al dente. | | 14 | Drain; remove to serving platter. | | 15 | Toss with sauce. | | 16 | Top with remaining sunflower seeds. | | 17 | Serves 6 |
