Ingredients:

| cup | Shortening | | 1
| cup | Packed brown sugar | | 1
| cup | Granulated sugar | | 2
| | Eggs | | 1
| tsp | Vanilla | | 2
| cup | Quick-cooking oats | | 3/4
| cup | Chopped dates | | 1/2
| cup | Chopped raisins | | 1/2
| cup | Chopped pecans | | 3/4
| cup | Chocolate bits | | | OPTIONAL | | | Coconut, dried apricots | | | Chopped walnuts | | | Butterscotch chips, etc. |

Procedures:
| 1 | This recipe is from my father-in-law ed stang. | | 2 | He just dumped in whatever goodies are on hand; they always taste great. | | 3 | Preheat oven to 350? | | 4 | In a medium bowl add all-purpose and whole wheat flours, baking powder and salt. | | 5 | In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugars; blend in eggs and vanilla. | | 6 | Beat well. | | 7 | Add dry ingredients and mix well. | | 8 | Add oats, fruit, nuts and chocolate bits; mix in thoroughly. | | 9 | Dough will be crumbly. | | 10 | Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets, using fingers to shape together. | | 11 | Bake at 350?about 12 minutes or until golden brown. | | 12 | Remove to rack to cool. | | 13 | Yield: about 6 dozen. | | 14 | Kathleen stang, freelance food writer, seattle, wa randy shearer |
