Hartshorn german christmas cookies

Ingredients:
2 cupSugar
1/2 tspSalt
1 cupShortening
2 Eggs
1 cupMilk
1 tbspHartshorn ***
1/2 cupBoiling water
2 tspVanilla
Flour to stiffen
1 ozAnise seeds
Procedures:
1* hartshorn can be obtained at your pharmacy.
2It is ammonium crystals

4Mix sugar, salt, shortening, eggs,and milk.
5In a separate bowl, dissolve the hartshorn in the boiling water.
6Make sure it is completely dissolved.
7Add vanilla and anise seeds to the sugar mixture.
8Add hartshorn mixture to sugar mixture.
9Add enough flour to the sugar mixture to stiffen and not to be sticky.
10It may require 4-5 pounds! Roll out dough on floured surface, and cut with cookie cutters.
11Bake immediately after mixing in a moderate oven (325-350°F) for 10-15 minutes.

13One half the recipe is suggested (up to 100 cookies).
