California fig oatmeal cookies

Ingredients:
1 cupCalifornia dried figs
-- (coarsely chopped)
3/4 cupShortening
1 cupBrown sugar
2 Eggs
8 tbspWater
2 cupFlour
2 tspBaking powder
1 tspCinnamon
1/2 tspSalt
2 cupQuick-cooking oats
1/2 cupChopped nut meats
Procedures:
1Cover figs with hot water, allow to stand 10 minutes.
2Pour off water and reserve for liquid.
3Snip stems off figs, then chop coarsely.
4Sift flour, measure.
5Then add baking powder, salt and cinnamon.
6Sift together.
7Add oats, chopped figs and nut meats.
8Cream shortening; add sugar, cream together thoroughly.
9Add well-beaten egg, then add sifted dry ingredients alternately with water to form dough.
10Drop by teaspoonfuls on greased cookie sheet and bake at 400°F. for 10 minutes.
