Ingredients:
2 1/2 cupFlour
1 1/2 tspBaking powder
1/2 tspSalt
1 cupShortening, softened
1 1/4 cupSugar
1 Egg, unbeaten
1 tspVanilla
1/4 cupCandied cherries, snipped
- OR maraschino cherries
1 ozUnsweetened chocolate
- melted, 1 square
2 tbspPoppy seeds
Procedures:
1Mix flour, baking powder and salt.
2Cream shortening until light and fluffy, gradually adding sugar.
3Stir in egg and vanilla; beat well.
4Blend in flour mixture.
5Divide dough into 3 parts.
6Add cherries to one, chocolate to second, and poppy seeds to third.
7Into bottom of waxed paper lined 9x5x3-inch pan, pack cherry mixture evenly, then chocolate, then poppy seed.
8Refrigerate at least 24 hours.
9Remove dough from pan; cut in half lengthwise, then crosswise into ?inch slices.
10On ungreased cookie sheets, bake 8-10 minutes or till very light brown at 400°F.
11Makes 6-7 dozen.
