Black bottom pie

Ingredients:
1/2 cupSugar
1 9" baked pastry shell
1 tbspCornstarch
1 tbspUnflavored gelatin
2 cupScalded milk
4 Egg yolks, beaten
1/4 cupCold water
1 tspVanilla
1/2 tspVanilla extract
6 ozSemi-sweet chocolate bits
4 Egg whites
1/2 cupSugar
Procedures:
1Combine cornstarch & ?c sugar.
2Slowly add milk to egg yolks, then stir into sugar & cornstarch mixture.
3Cook in double boiler, stirring constantly, until it coats spoon.
4Remove from heat, add vanilla.
5Remove one cup of this custard mixture and stir in chocolate bits until melted.
6Pour chocolate mixture inyo pastry shell & chill.
7Soften gelatin in water and add to remaining hot custard; stir until gelatin is dissolved.
8Add flavoring.
9Chill until slightly thickened.
10Beat eggs whites until soft peaks form.
11Gradually add remaining sugar while beating, until stiff.
12Fold custard/gelatin into egg whites and pile over chocolate layer in pie shell.
13Chill until set and garnish with chopped walnuts
