Ingredients:
FOR THE BATTER
1/2 cupSHORTENING
1 cupBOILING WATER
1 cupEVAPORATED MILK
1/2 tspLEMON EXTRACT
3 packYEAST
1/2 cupWARM WATER
2 eachEGGS, BEATEN
1/2 tspNUTMEG
1/2 cupSUGAR
2 tspSALT
9 cupFLOUR
1 eachOIL FOR FRYING
FOR THE FROSTING
1/2 cupBUTTER
1/2 cupLIGHT BROWN SUGAR
3 tbspHEAVY CREAM
3/4 tspMAPLE FLAVORING
1 eachPOWDERED SUGAR AS NEEDED
Procedures:
1Combine shortening and boiling water.
2Stir in milk and lemon flavoring.
3Dissolve the yeast in ?cup warm water.
4When shortening mixture is lukewarm add in yeast mix.
5Add remaining ingredients, adding just enough flour to make a soft dough that can be kneaded.
6Knead for 5 minutes.
7Cover dough and let rest for 10 minutes.
8Roll out to ?inch thickness.
9Cut into 6" x 1" strips.
10Cover with tea towel and let rise for 1 hour.
11Heat oil to 375 deg f.
12Slip raised side of dough into oil and then turn over, cooking both sides until lightly browned.
13Drain on paper towels, then frost.
14For the icing, boil the butter, brown sugar, and cream in a small pan for three minutes.
15Add flavoring, then enough powdered sugar to make spreading easy. enjoy
